The film expands the scope of the first movie, taking the plumbers from the Mushroom Kingdom into various cosmic worlds. After Princess Peach's birthday party is interrupted, Mario and his team must navigate new galaxies to rescue Rosalina and confront the duo of Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr.. Producers have teased that while the Super Mario Galaxygames are the core inspiration, the movie will include "surprises for fans of every Mario era".

After a perfect outing with her boyfriend, Kenna makes an unbearable mistake that sends her to prison for seven years. Hoping to rebuild her life after her release, she tries to reunite with her daughter, but her custodial grandparents refuse to let Kenna see her. She soon finds unexpected compassion from a local bar owner as their secret romance gives Kenna hope for a second chance.
